A family of at least two people who collectively earn $138,000 or less per year will likely soon qualify for one tier of San Francisco's affordable housing that would allow them to buy a home unit, following Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting. 

Under the city's previous policy, last updated in 2002, only those who earned 55 percent of the typical San Francisco median household income or less were able to utilize the option to buy affordable housing, per ABC. With the new proposal, families of at least two who are together earning up to 150 percent of San Francisco's median income can take advantage of that amendment.

San Francisco continued to hash out details Tuesday of a proposed law requiring developers to build affordable housing even as the Board of Supervisors has celebrated on more than one occasion — including Tuesday — that a deal was reached.

A vote on the law was postponed for hours as amendments were hammered out behind the scenes, but ultimately the board unanimously approved the new inclusionary housing requirements.

Board members and labor leaders who helped negotiate the deal for months held a rally on Civic Center Plaza prior to the meeting, celebrating the deal. They called on those who were displaced from San Francisco to apply for these yet-to-be-built affordable homes.

Dominic Calabrese has run an automobile shop on the corner of 23rd Street and Treat Avenue since 1980, fixing and building old-school cars that he says “other people won’t build.”

But he says his long-time landlord has asked him to pay more rent in recent years as the Mission has changed with the tech boom, and the future has become unclear for Cal’s Automotive Center while Calabrese negotiates a new lease with the owner.

“I love where I’m at,” said Calabrese, 58. “It’s just all this other stuff has moved around me, it’s like mosquitos and I have to have more spray so I don’t get bit.”
